In a recent interview with 4Gamer (translated by Nintendo Everything), Triangle Strategy producer Tomoya Asano talked about the visual style D2R items cheap, as well as how it's implemented in future games by the company. When the interviewer expressed surprise by the fact that more indie games had not been able to replicate the style, Asano revealed the reason that it's quite expensive!

"It's definitely worth noting that it costs more than you'd imagine. In this regard, it's very compatible with the titles want out of Square Enix. It's unlikely that there's much to gain from copying other companies," Asano told 4gamer.Fortunately the cost of this won't deter Square Enix from releasing more games that are similar to this.

Remakes of Live a Live is set to be released exclusively on Nintendo Switch in July, as a remake of Dragon Quest III is currently developing. There are numerous games that could benefit from this style and it will be fascinating to learn what Square Enix does with HD-2D next. Although the company has definitely put money into this graphic style, Asano went on to explain that there's no currently a "definitive guideline," and it will continue to change according to the game.

"We haven't created anything similar to that. The way that it's presented differs from title to title, so the HD-2D experience will be different each time. When you play Live A Live for example The atmosphere of the prehistoric area is likely to be different to the sci-fi scene. The possibilities of expression have increased thanks to the new ideas we've formulated. "While the cost might be prohibitive for some developers D2R ladder items, HD-2D has definitely served as a draw for many gamers. I hope we'll witness Square Enix find new ways to extend the style and create more games to be made!
